Its Going To Be a Tough Year!
The old man and I decided to take a day and half hunting trip to my usual locations. We left here around 10am so that I could bypass all the downtown LA traffic. We made good time as I decided to drive around LA, although it was longer in distance, the lack of traffic saved us much in headaches and time. While reaching one of my honey holes, I noticed all the dirt roads that allowed access were now posted with "No Trespass" signs. Great. The only way to reach my spots legally, is to park on top of the mountain traverse ascend toward the public lands. Well having forgotten our sandwiches in the car, not having breakfast, and not being in hunting shape, and the combination of higher altitude air, I quickly gave up this idea after about a half of a mile in. We headed back to the Rover and I decided to hit another not as "honey" but good enough hunting hole.
The drive to this area from the honey hole is not far. We made it to to Joels Spring and parked as we ate our sandwiches to fuel up. Within the first 10 minutes of the hunt Kaiser and I were on birds. A covey of about five flushed wild in a an area that kaiser was working. On my first shot, I managed to hit a female valley quail with my 20 gauge size 6 B&P F2 ammo out of my IC barrel of my Merkel 47e. She fell out of the sky like a sack of potatoes. Although some consider it too big, Ive decided to start using size 6 shot for quail. By using it, I cripple less birds and most die immediately making the birds easy to find for the dog. I can then spend less time searching for a downed bird and more time actually hunting. Also if I run into chuckars, I will not feel undergunned. For the rest of the day we were finding singles or pairs. No big conveys. Most of these birds were smart, holding tight, and flushing behind a tree or other obstacle so making it impossible for a shot. We came home with only one bird this evening hunt. While driving out, as the sun was making its last appearance of the day, a covey of 15 quail flushed in front of the road toward the safety of their roasting area for the night. We made no attempt to go after them as we had only a minutes of light left. We headed to town for a nice hot Italian meal before we headed to out motel to rest up for tomorrow.

Waders Mandatory
With that area now disturbed I moved further downstream. The wind was now beginning to pick up and I casted along bass twin tule and tried my luck for some bass. Although the wind was blowing this section of tules, they were moving more violently than the wind conditions were dictating. I knew there was a fish feeding within those weeds. I casted into it and instantly I was hooked up. This fish bull dogged me the whole time and I figured it may have been a nice bass. eventually the fish came up high enough to notice that it was another carp. This fish, like the last, only made few attempts at a sprint but no long runs. When I finally got it to hand it was about a 4 pounder. After that I had my fix and headed out of there. Not a bad day for about a hours worth of work.
Carping So Good I Shit Myself Not Really

I started to make my way back to the truck looking for tails on the way back. A pod of 5 of so rather large carp were on the other side of the river. I double hauled to reach the other side. I lost connection with the fly line with my stripping hand. The carp took it on the drop. I set the hook with only one hand by rotating my waist to the right. Surprisingly the fish was on. This one was about 3.5.
While trying to cast in front of a cruising carp I spooked it but continued to strip and felt a light bump. As I pulled him in I noticed it was a baby bass. Its nice to see that the bass have successfully bred. This is only the third bass Ive ever caught out of here. All fish caught on a BH Rubber-Legged Hares Ear on a Sage 6 wt XP with Abel Pt5.

C F Design Wet Fly Case
C&F Design magnetic 3/3 box is unavailable here in the states. I purchased two of these in Japan back in 2005. I had completely forgot I had them as I have not done any steelhead or salmon fishing in several years. The case is designed for medium sized wet flies (size 4-8). On each side it contains 3 rows of 5 magnetic holders. In the center is a divider that holds a dropper wallet on each side. The case is an ordinary s-sized C&F case.
Although unique, the dropper wallet is something Ive yet to completely figure out. I can not seem to make it work properly. The theory is you can pre-rig a dropper for fast and easy set up.
The magnets are strong and hold the fly very firmly. With the case open I have shook it violently to see if I could pry a fly out it place and could not.

Kaiser and I take a rest while searching for chukar.
I missed the early dove season. I missed the early season mountain quail. I missed the regular season opener. The Rover was packed last week and I was ready to go up until I hopped in the drivers seat and the truck wouldnt start. As a result the trip was cancelled as I went to go replace the battery. In addition to that I had them do my routine maintenance. They found that I needed to replace my front bushings. Great start to the season.
After a lousy start, I decided to today was going to be the first time out. I was in no mood to wake up early to beat morning traffic I choose to leave the house late morning. We arrived the on the hunting fields at 3pm. Within only a few minutes from the car, we flushed a loose covey of about 8. I took a 30 yard right to left shot. I missed with the first IC barrel of the 20 gauge Merkel 47E but managed him with the second Mod barrel. My intetion was to climb to get some chukar so I was using B&P F2 Classic #6. I with my father through a dried out riverbed where weve had great luck in the past. No other birds appeared. Once through, I decided to climb the mountain for a chance at chukar. I left dad at the flatlands and walked parallel to each other. I climbed higher than Ive ever climbed on this mountain. Unfortunately Kaiser and I were unable to find any birds. Unlike me, dad managed better than I. He flushed two small conveys and took two quail for his efforts. We met back at the truck by this time it was alittle after 5. We began driving out, not far from the main road a covey of at least 20 flushed to our right. Stopping the car, we jumped out and pursued the birds. Singles and double flush wild but shots were difficult as we were in some thick stuff along with a forest of cholla, yucca and other desert plants. We managed none of those birds. These birds acted like late season birds. They must be holdovers. After all the rain this spring Im surprised I didnt see more birds and more dumber young birds.
Kaiser and I are not in hunting shape. This is completely my fault, I should have done alot more to get us ready for the season. Oh well. Im typing in motel and Im beat. Pictures for some reason will not upload so they will go up later.
Skunked at MVL
Once again Chul and I tried our luck at Mission Viejo Lake. With bass currently in spawning and post spawning modes, we were confident we would be able to get on some aggressive bass. We were wrong. The lakes clear water is now green and visibility is poor. Other than near the marina, we saw no beds or fish for that matter. Chuk managed to hook up on one juvenile LMB before it came unglued near the boat. I had one bump that I missed. We fished from 11:30 to 2:30. Wind picked up seriously around 1:30.

First Look The Gourmet Salamander Fly
| The prototype Salamander fly |
After reading hundreds of reports from gear guys catching bass on salamanders, for the longest time Ive been trying unsuccessfully to create a fly that imitates these creatures. Ive never even come close. It was not until I started buying Fish Skull sculpin heads did I realize my dreams may have been answered. I made a few quick drawings one day away in the journal and later when I had time went to the vice to see if theory can become reality. Im still experimenting with the body and possibly the legs but this is what I came up with. I had planned to try them today at Perris Lake but apparently my fishing buddys vagina hurt and canceled on me last night. I know youre reading this, did you really expect no ribbing from me? Ill have to wait to see if these flies are a go or no go. Well see, hopefully next week.
